Needle and thread fine line tattoo on the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small single-needle sewing motif with a looping thread is drawn in thin black line work. The design sits on the upper chest near the collarbone, with a green fabric top strap and a dark bra strap visible beside it. The clear film edge around the design suggests it may be a temporary tattoo, and the plain, light background keeps the focus on the motif.

The hall smelled of urn tea and floor polish, and Joan Pascoe had spent twenty minutes by the raffle table trying to decide whether the woman in the cardigan was Deborah Ashworth or the girl who had once cheated at netball. Then the woman turned, lifted a needle from the table, and pushed black cotton through its eye in one clean movement, the way only one person in Form 4B ever could.

Deborah had been the one who ran up the hems on the school play costumes and let the younger girls stand behind her during fittings. Joan remembered the summer they made a sailor suit for Miss Holt's nephew out of a pair of old curtains, and how the thread kept snapping until Deborah licked the end and tried again. "Still doing alterations?" Joan asked. "Only the ones nobody else will take," said Deborah, and nodded at a jacket over the back of a chair, split open at the shoulder.
Joan had come to say sorry for something from 1989, a borrowed blouse with a scorch on the sleeve that she had blamed on Deborah. She opened her mouth, but Deborah was already threading a second needle and holding it up to the strip light. "Hold this," she said, and pressed the torn seam into Joan's hands. For ten minutes they worked side by side without speaking, two bent heads over one thin black stitch.
When the urn ran dry, Joan knotted the thread and bit it off the way she had been taught. "You never did say sorry," Deborah said, not looking up. "I'm saying it now," said Joan. "Good. Thread's yours then." She folded the jacket and passed it across, the needle still caught in its lining like something nobody had meant to lose.
