Open zip tattoo down a bare back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman sits with her bare back to the camera, her dark hair falling over her shoulders. A realistic metal zip, with its teeth and pull, runs down the spine and appears to part to reveal shaded skin beneath. The image uses a plain blue-grey wall and pale green bedding as its backdrop, with the subject centred in the frame.

"Hold it flat," says Dev, who has climbed down from the ladder with juice drying on his chin. "No, the other side. It wants to go the other way."

You smooth the canvas across your knee. The teeth run from collar to hem in two bright rows, and where the cloth parts it shows the lining, a dark strip of old wool gone the colour of stewed tea. Your father wore this coat every September for thirty years, picking until his knuckles cracked, and it has never closed properly since the winter he caught it on the gate.

Dev asks why you don't just buy a new one from the market in town. You tell him the gap is where the cold gets in and the heat gets out, and that was always the point of it. He shrugs and goes back up the ladder. The sun slides behind the far hedge, and the pickers start calling to each other down the rows.

You fold the coat over the back of the chair and leave the zip open, a hand's width, so the evening can find its way inside and the wasps can find their way out.
