La dolce vita script on the back of a hand

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with the phrase la dolce vita written in black cursive script across the back, running from the wrist towards the knuckles. The lettering has smooth, joined strokes with slightly heavier downstrokes, and the black ink stands out clearly against pale skin. The background is a soft blur of greenery and water, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Teodora Vale had been painting names on the transom of the Caterina Rosa for nine days out of Genoa, and the old bosun still hadn't forgiven her for the spacing on the first A. She worked from a tin of gold leaf and a brush worn down to six hairs, leaning over the stern rail while the wake churned below like cream in a bowl.

On the tenth morning the captain asked for a different line. Not a name this time. He wanted words for the cabin wall of his wife, who had never seen the sea and would not come aboard past Gibraltar. "Something she can read when the swell gets up," he said. Teodora chose a looping cursive, the kind her grandmother used on wedding menus, and wrote la dolce vita in soft black paint, letting the downstrokes lean the way the wind leaned.

It took three hours. The paint dried faster than she expected in the salt air, so she worked the joins quickly, one word running into the next before the brush went dry. When she stepped back, the letters seemed to tilt towards the porthole, as if they meant to see out.

The captain looked at it for a long while. Then he took the brush from her, dipped it, and added a full stop no bigger than a grain of rice. "For the harbour we are sailing to," he said, "not the one we left." Teodora cleaned her brushes that night and did not ask which harbour he meant. She suspected he did not know yet either.
