Fine line black script reading 'everything was beautiful and nothing hurt' running diagonally down the inner forearm near the wrist.

Script quote on the inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a wrist and forearm with a handwritten-style quote in thin black script, set in three diagonal lines of text. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The plain grey background keeps the focus on the lettering, which fills the centre of the forearm.

Mrs Hallam had been sorting the Thursday post for forty minutes before she noticed the card had been written in pencil, the letters leaning hard to the right as if they were running for the bus. It was addressed to the cottage at the end of Larch Lane, the one the Pryce boys had boarded up after the flood, and the stamp was a second-class one from the year the reservoir was finished.

She carried it out past the church and the bins to the edge of the forest, where the path gave up being a path and became a line of trodden bracken. Nobody lived past the last stile any more. The trees there were older than the village and had opinions about visitors, and Mrs Hallam had never once walked it without talking to herself.

Inside the card, in the same leaning hand, someone had written a single line that ran down the page in three uneven strokes: everything was beautiful and nothing hurt. Underneath, smaller, as if added later, was a second sentence: tell the wood I kept my promise.

She stood in the clearing a long time. The ferns were wet. A blackbird began and stopped. Then she slid the card under the flat stone by the gate, the way the old postmistress had taught her, and turned back toward the lights of the village, where the kettle would be cold by now and the next delivery was already waiting.
