Lace bow with heart on thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a bow with a lace pattern filling its loops and tails, with a shaded heart-shaped brooch at the centre. The lace is rendered in dense black ink with fine grey shading that gives the bow depth and a fabric texture. The collage shows the same tattoo from four angles on skin, with two close views on the thigh and two photographs taken from a different angle.

The third time the lift stuck between floors, you stopped counting and started talking to the old man in the bed by the window, because he was awake too, and because somebody ought to hear about the box. It had come up from pharmacy at ten past two, wrapped in brown paper and addressed to Ward 7 in a hand that looked like it had been taught by someone strict. Inside, under tissue, was a ribbon of black lace folded into a bow, with a small heart in tarnished silver pinned at its centre.

Nobody on days had claimed it. Sister Okafor said it was probably a gift for a patient who had died before the parcel arrived, which happened more often than people thought, and that it should go in the office drawer until someone came asking. You didn't put it in the drawer. You sat with it at the desk while the monitors chirped their slow rota, and you worked out that the lace was not lace at all but a fine print, the loops too regular for hands. Still it held its shape, the way things do when they have been pressed flat in a book for years.
At four the old man asked what you were holding, and you told him. He gave a short dry laugh and said his wife had worn a bow like that to the Palais in 1961, and had tied one to the back of his chair the night she left him for a man who sold insurance. He said the heart was real silver. He asked you to fasten it to his drip stand instead of throwing it away, so at quarter past four you did, one loop hooked over the chrome, the tails hanging down past the saline bag like something from a better room.
By handover the bow was still there, swaying a little each time the doors at the end of the corridor sighed open. Nobody moved it. You clocked off with cold tea in your throat and the lift working again, and when you looked back through the glass the old man was asleep with one hand resting on the lace, as if he had been asked to keep it safe for someone still on their way.
