Lace garter and bow on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A lace garter band wraps around the thigh, with a shaded bow at the centre and a long ribbon tail hanging below it. The lace motifs are drawn in fine black linework, while the bow and ribbon use soft grey shading to give them volume. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against plain skin, with dark fabric visible at the top edge.

The oven has been ticking for twenty minutes before you think to look at the clock, and by then the lace doilies are already laid out on the steel bench in rows, like something waiting to be dressed. You pick up the spool of grey satin ribbon, wet your thumb, and find the end without looking. Your mother taught you that the bow matters less than the tail. Anyone can loop a bow. A tail that falls at the right angle is what makes a box look carried rather than delivered.

Box number nine is for the Pemberton wedding, three tiers, and the order sheet says lace band, centre bow, long tail, in the handwriting of the bride's aunt, who has underlined tail twice. You wrap the lace round the box, twice, pin it at the back with a glass-headed pin, and fold the loops. The first bow comes out lopsided, so you undo it and start again. Outside the window the sky over the car park goes from ink to the colour of dishwater, and a van reverses somewhere, beeping.

Your hands know the rhythm now. Two loops, cross, tuck, pull. You cut the tail on the slant with the good scissors, the ones nobody else is allowed to sharpen, and let it fall over the edge of the cardboard. It hangs straight down the side and stops a finger's width above the cool tray. Esme comes in from the back with a rack of rolls, sees the box, and says nothing, which from Esme is praise.

When the van finally pulls up at six, you carry box nine out yourself and set it on the passenger seat with the seatbelt across it, because you have never once trusted a driver with a tail. The driver shrugs. You go back inside, wipe the bench, and find one lace doily left over, its small circles still intact, which you fold into your apron pocket for no reason you could explain to anyone.
