A large bow with two looped wings and trailing ribbon tails, drawn with bold outlines. The bow and ribbons are filled with stave lines and musical notes, and the ribbons are shaded with soft grey gradients. The tattoo is shown in close-up on a bare arm against a plain light background.

Mrs Okonedo had ruled staves by hand for thirty-one years, and the nib of her pen was the only thing in the copying room that never complained. Her nephew Dev came in on a Thursday with a parcel from the orchestra's library, the brown string already knotted round it, and asked why she was still at it when the printers in Leeds could do the lot by machine.

She did not look up. She was copying the second oboe part for a symphony nobody would play until spring, and every note had to sit exactly on its line or the players would stumble at the bar where the rests fell wrong. "Machines don't hear a mistake," she said. "They only print it."
When the parcel was opened, the string came away in one loose length, and beneath it lay a dozen sheets of blue-ruled manuscript that someone had torn in half and crossed out. She folded them into loops without thinking, the way her mother had folded sugar bags, and tied the middle with a fresh strip of the same paper. Dev watched her make two wings and two long tails, and the crotchets and minims she had written years ago and forgotten began to look like small black birds perched along the staves.
She propped the bow against the lamp. "There," she said. "That's a thing somebody can still read."
