Lace garter and ribbon bow on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a lace garter wrapped around the upper leg, with a ribbon bow at the centre topped by a small five-petal flower. The lace is drawn in fine outline with stippled detail, while the ribbon is shaded to suggest folds and highlights. The palette is muted, mainly beige, tan and pale gold tones, set against the skin.

Mind the bucket, love, and sit where the gull can't reach you. Right, where was I. Agnes Lyall, that's who I mean, the one who made lace for the whole of Cullen Bay before the war took the young men. She'd sit on the harbour wall with a pillow of bobbins across her knee, and the bobbins clicked like crab claws while the boats came in. She never once looked up at a single one of them.

Her son Davie went out on the Provident in the March. He was eighteen and sure of everything, and the morning he sailed she gave him a garter, a band of her finest pricked lace with a ribbon bow tied at the front and a little five-petalled flower stitched in the middle to hold it all together. He laughed at her. Said a garter was no good to a lad on a trawler. She told him to wear it where he'd feel it, and if the weather turned, to tie the ribbon ends off to a cleat so the sea would know somebody was still counting.
The weather turned. The Provident came back without him, but the garter came back too, washed up in a creel off the Pinkie rocks with the ribbons still tight and the flower still white. Agnes didn't cry. She unpicked the bow, counted the loops, and found one knot she had never tied, a sailor's hitch, neat as you like. So she left it in. Every morning after that she tied the bow back on the pillow and left one loop undone, so there'd be a reason for someone to come home and finish it.
