Lace garter with bow on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A lace garter with a bow, a pearl-like bead at its centre and two trailing ribbon ends wraps around the upper thigh. The shading is soft and smooth, giving the lace, ribbon and bow a three-dimensional, realistic look. The palette is mostly muted pale green and teal with light pink tones in the lace edging, and the tattoo is centred on the thigh against a plain skin background.

Mrs Ada Penhale kept her sewing machine on the kitchen table of flat fourteen, Gantry House, where the lift had been broken since the spring the river came up. She took in mending for the whole block: hems, zips, a christening gown for the family on nine who could not afford the shop in town. Nobody asked her for anything fancy, so when the lass from twelve climbed the stairs one wet Tuesday with a length of pale green silk folded over her hand, Ada knew it was a wedding before anyone said the word.

'It was my nan's ribbon,' the lass said, setting it down as if it might spill. 'I want something to go with it. Something nobody sees but everybody knows is there.'
Ada took a roll of lace from the drawer that smelled of lavender and old pennies. She cut it narrow, pinned it to a band of elastic, and tied the bow herself, pulling each loop until it sat the way her mother had taught her: not so tight it bit, not so loose it slid. Where the loops met she stitched a single pearl bead, chipped at one edge, the one she had carried in her purse since her own wedding in 1971.
The lass came back on Friday for the fitting. Ada had curled the two long ribbon ends over the back of a knitting needle so they would fall just so. The lass held the band up to the stairwell window, where the light came in grey off the car park, and turned it slowly, the way you might turn a shell to hear the sea.
'He'll never see it,' she said.
'Then it's done its job,' said Ada, and went back to the hem of a stranger's coat.
