Lace garter with bow on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo on the outer thigh showing a lace garter band with a large bow, a central bead and two trailing ribbon ends. The lace edging and bow are shaded with soft greys and pale tones that give the ribbon and fabric a three-dimensional look. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame, with denim shorts and a patterned top visible above it.

The ribbon-maker of Coldharbour Lane had one rule, which was that a garter was never sold, only lent. She kept a basket of lace by the back door and a tin of glass beads, and when a girl came to be wed she tied the band above the knee herself, pulled the bow square, and sent her out to the church with the ends trailing. Her name was Hester Quaile, and nobody in the parish could remember her being young.

The year the school closed, the reunion was held in the old schoolroom, the one with the coat pegs still screwed to the wall. Forty-one of them came back. Hester was not invited, but she came anyway, carrying a shoebox, and stood by the urn until a woman called Margery Pine asked what was in it. A garter, Hester said, left behind at a dance in 1962 and never claimed. Margery laughed and said she had been to that dance, had worn a garter, and had cried about losing it for a week. Hester opened the box. The lace was yellowed at the edges, the bow was grey where the light had never reached it, and the bead at its centre was the only thing that still shone.
Nobody agreed whose it was. They argued the way old friends do, over who had nicked whose chalk and who had kissed whom behind the bike sheds. In the end they drew straws, and Margery won. She turned the band over and found, stitched small inside the lace, the initials of a girl who had been dead for ten years. Margery sat down on a classroom chair far too small for her. Then she pressed the bead against her palm and said it was time to go home. She drove back to Wigan with the bead in her pocket, and it stayed warm the whole way.
