Lace garter with bow on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A thigh is shown with a tattoo of a lace garter wrapped around it, topped by a large bow with a small round centre detail and two long trailing ribbon ends. The bow and ribbons are shaded in soft greens and teal, while the lace edging appears in pale peach tones. The tattoo is centred in the frame, with the top edge of denim shorts visible above it against a dark background.

The ledger at Thornley Road says I logged the green lace bow on a Tuesday in March 1947, between a left glove and a tin of barley sugar. Nobody claimed it. Porters don't wear lace, so it sat in the drawer under my tea caddy for eleven weeks while the 6.15 to Lowmoor came and went through the rain.

In the twelfth week a man in a demob suit came to the counter asking after a bride. He had a photograph, creased soft at the corners, of a girl with a pearl pinned at the centre of a bow the colour of pond water. He said she had left Thornley on the last train before his own, and that the ribbon ends were meant to be tied by his hand, not hers. I told him lost property was not a matchmaking office.
He didn't leave. He sat on the bench by the ticket hall and talked about trains, about how he had come home the wrong way round, and how his mother had sewn the lace from a veil that never got worn. I looked at the drawer, at the ribbon still folded inside it, and thought about how much trouble one small bow could make of a tidy shelf.
I gave it to him in the end, wrapped in brown paper. He tucked it into his coat without unwrapping it. The next morning the drawer was empty, and I wrote one more line in pencil beside the entry: claimed, by the wrong man, who turned out to be the right one after all.
