Lace garter with bow on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A lace garter with a central bow and trailing ribbon ends is tattooed around the leg. The lace pattern is rendered with fine linework and soft grey shading, giving the fabric texture and depth. The design sits horizontally across the image on smooth skin, with a blurred background.

The bow never sits straight when Mrs Penhallow ties it, and you have stopped asking her to try. On Quay Street the lace shop smells of starch and paraffin, and every Thursday you sit on the stool by the window while she works the bobbins, her fingers quick as gulls. The lace in the window is cream, but the garters she makes for the brides of Porthkerris look grey by late afternoon, as if the sea had got into the threads.

Tomorrow the Dunstan boy sails for the Newfoundland banks, and his mother wants a garter sewn for the girl he means to marry at Michaelmas, though the girl has not yet said yes. "Lace holds," Mrs Penhallow says, pinning a ribbon end between her teeth. "Whatever else goes, lace holds." You fold the spare ribbon into loops the way she taught you, two loops and a tail, and the tail always trails a little longer than you mean it to.

On the last evening the wind drops and the harbour lies flat as pewter. You carry the finished garter down to the slipway, where the Dunstan boy waits with his duffel on one shoulder. He turns it over, finds the initials she has stitched beneath the bow, where only someone looking closely would see them, and laughs. He asks you to tie it for him. Your fingers are steady this time. The bow comes out crooked again, and he says it is perfect.
