Geometric arrow tattoo on the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A vertical geometric design in black ink sits on the side of a bare torso, below the arm. It is built from thin single lines forming a central arrow-like spine, nested diamonds and chevrons that taper at the top and bottom. The photograph is warm-toned and slightly dark, with the subject's long hair visible at the left edge and the design centred in the frame.

The paddles at Sallow Lock had seized again, and Mae stood on the wet coping with the windlass in her fist, cursing whoever had drawn the canal so straight. Her father had never trusted a straight line. He liked his waterways to bend and double back, and he had inked every one of them onto a fold of linen paper that now lay in the wheelhouse, soft as cloth from handling.

She had been carrying the boat south for three weeks on his instructions, which meant reading the chart at every lock and finding nothing that matched the water. The bridges were drawn as small chevrons pointing upstream. The marker boards along the towpath were diamonds, one nested inside another, so a boater could count the turns without looking up. At the head of the page, where the legend should have been, a single arrow ran the height of the sheet with barbs at both ends, and beside it he had written in pencil: keep the spine true and the river will open.

The paddle gave with a crack. Water roared through the gate and the boat lifted, slow as a sigh, and Mae let it carry her into the chamber. Above the lock the old junction sat under a skin of duckweed. She had assumed it was a ruin, a branch the council had filled decades ago, but the chevrons on the chart pointed straight at it.

She dropped the windlass into the bilge and took the tiller. The boat slid toward the left-hand gap in the reeds, where the water looked like nothing at all, and she kept the spine true, just as he had said, until the reeds parted and the open river lay ahead, bright and unmarked.
