Two geometric bands on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a forearm with two rectangular bands wrapped around it, stacked with a thin gap between them. Each band has a heavy black outline enclosing an intricate symmetrical pattern of leaf-like or lotus-like shapes. The image is black and grey, with the skin in soft mid-tones against a dark background, and the bands are centred in the frame.

Put the nippers down, our Danny, and come and look at this. Ninety-one years this border's been under the vestry carpet at Bethesda, and nobody's lifted it since my old dad laid it. See the two bands, one stacked on the other, with that thin line of grout between like a hair parting? Your great-granddad cut that gap himself. He'd a crate of blue-black tiles from a bankrupt works in Burslem and not enough of them to finish the pattern.

Albert Crane was a quiet man who went to chapel for the singing and never for the sermon. The deacons wanted the floor done for a wedding in the spring, so he knelt on a sack every evening for a fortnight, cutting lotus leaves out of the stubborn tile with a hammer and a bit of cold chisel. Mrs Ellery, the minister's daughter, brought him tea in a jam jar and sat on the pew steps pretending to read. She told me herself, years after, that she never once saw him rush a leaf.
When the tiles ran out he simply counted what he had left, halved it, and laid the second band off the first. So the lower band has one leaf turned the wrong way, pointing back at its neighbour as if it's had a word with it. Nobody at the wedding noticed, and the deacons never did either. Mrs Ellery walked over that floor every Sunday until she was ninety, and I like to think she was the only one who counted.
