Lace garter with pink ribbon bow on thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A lace garter band runs around the upper thigh, with a pink satin bow and trailing ribbon tied at the lower left. The black lace pattern uses fine outlines and grey shading to suggest depth, while the ribbon is rendered in pink and mauve with soft highlights. The image is framed close on the leg, with denim shorts visible at the bottom edge.

The parcel came on a wet Tuesday, wrapped in brown paper gone soft at the corners. Inside was a band of black lace no wider than a hand, its scallops picked out in grey, and a bow of pink satin faded to the colour of weak tea at the folds. Ada Pryor had mended lace in the back room of her Sneinton terrace for thirty-one years, and she knew at once it was Nottingham work, the kind her mother had pinned to a board under a north window before the mills closed.

The note was pencilled on the back of a bus timetable: Mend what you can. Leave the bow. She set the magnifier on its brass stand and lifted the lace with a steel pricker. Two mesh holes had frayed where the thread had worn thin, and beneath the bow she found a knot no bigger than a lentil. Inside it, folded small, was a slip of paper with a single line in pencil: for the long walk home, both sides.
She worked until the gas lamp in the street went on outside. She rebuilt the mesh one loop at a time, matching the twist of the thread, and when she reached the bow she did not retie it. The first hand's knot was better than anything she could have made, so she copied it exactly, loop by loop, the way her mother had taught her to copy a pattern she did not understand.
In the morning she wrapped the band again, wrote Mended, bow left as found on the back of the timetable, and posted it. Then she set the satin in the front window to air, where the light from the road caught the pink and held it a moment longer than it needed to.
