Cook Hallam kept the galley of the brig Marrow Gull so clean that the mice had given up on it, all but one. It had two round ears like pennies and a habit of sitting on the flour bin as though it owned the stores. Hallam swore at it every morning and left it a crust every night, because the old men said a galley with no mouse in it was a galley with bad luck waiting in the bilge.

In the autumn of the long calms, the captain's wife sent aboard a jar of rose sugar from Smyrna, and a cutting too, wrapped in wet sacking. A single red rose was to live in a tin pot on the skylight, where the sun could reach it. Nobody tended it but the mouse. Each dawn the galley boy found the bloom turned towards the light, and beside the flour bin lay a fresh curl of wood shaving, cut into the shape of leaves and little looping stems.

The fog came down on the third night off the Dutch Teeth, and the Gull struck hard enough to throw the jars from their shelves. Tobin, the galley boy, was below with the sugar when the water found the hatch. Hallam was on deck at the pumps. Tobin heard a small insistent squeaking behind the bin and followed it through a gap no wider than his hand, into the bread locker where the air still held. He waited there until the squeaking stopped and a hand pulled him out at dawn.

All eleven men got off the wreck that morning. Hallam found the rose pot jammed in the rigging, its bloom still red. The next day the flour bin had a new curl of shaving beside it, and the old cook, who had never before been thanked by a mouse, left two crusts instead of one.
