The fair pulled out of Tallow Green on Tuesday with the big wheel folded like a dropped fan, and I still haven't found the peacock. Pearl moulted again in the night barn, and her eye feathers came down in the straw like someone had been careless with coins. Mr Pring says a bird that loses its best feathers is telling you it's done with a season. I told him Pearl was only sulking because the rain got into her crate.

Last Thursday a farmer's boy brought us a sack of pheasant feathers from the Garrow estate, striped brown and cream, and asked if we'd sell them to the costume woman. She paid him in toffee. I kept three back and tucked them in the lining of my coat, because they looked like the sort of thing you'd want in a pocket when the wind comes off the marsh at four in the morning. Mum would have called it collecting rubbish.

The peacock feather I did find, under the strongman's cot, green gone to bronze with the eye still bright enough to catch the lamp. I've taped it inside the lid of the bird crate. Pearl hasn't looked at it once. Mr Pring says she'll look when she's ready, and I believe him, mostly.

We're in Shrewhale by Friday. Write to the poste restante there and tell me whether the stripes or the eye would have been mine to choose, because I've started to think it's the one you keep that counts.
