Lotus mandala tattoo on mid back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical lotus flower sits in the centre of the back, drawn with fine black linework and filled with ornamental mandala patterns. Small dots form a vertical line above and below the motif, and dotwork shading adds texture to the petals and centre. The ink is solid black on warm skin, and the framing places the tattoo as the focal point of the image, with the woman's hand resting on her shoulder and her face not visible.

The damp came up through the flagstones of Sangdrak every winter, and every spring Brother Tashi climbed the scaffold to paint the lotus back onto the east wall. He mixed the black from lampblack and glue in a dented tin, the way his teacher had, and he worked the petals outward from the centre, leaving the mandala rings for last because they forgave mistakes.

Young Norbu, sent up from the valley school in September, held the lamp and asked too many questions. Why the dots above and below? Tashi did not answer at first. He dipped his brush and set a single dot above the flower, then another, as he had done since he was a boy. "Those are the years I have kept this wall," he said. "One for each time the damp came and I came back to it."

Norbu counted them, which was what Tashi had hoped. Twenty-nine dots above, twenty-nine below. Then the boy began counting the petals instead, sixteen on the outer ring, and the fine rings inside them, and the small pale circle at the heart that Tashi had never once painted over.

At dusk Tashi handed him the brush. "The last dot is yours," he said. Norbu set it beneath the flower, the ink still wet and shining, and the cold stone took it in without a sound.
