Lamp post and quote on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a woman's upper back showing a shaded black and grey lamp post on the left, with highlights on the glass and a soft cast shadow. Fine black script lettering runs diagonally across the right side of the shoulder blade, reading a quote about finding light in dark times. The composition is taken from behind and slightly above, with a grey top and pink bra strap visible at the bottom of the frame.

The snow had buried the pass by four o'clock, and by six the coach road below Hollin Cross was nothing but a pale smudge under a black sky. I stood in the inn doorway with my shawl pulled tight and watched the iron lamp post at the gatepost fail to glow. My father had kept it lit every dusk for thirty-one years. He died in February, and the lamp had sat cold since, its panes furred with soot and frost.

I went out with the tinderbox from his coat pocket, the one I had not yet had the heart to empty. The wind took the first match and then the second. My hands were so numb I could barely feel the brass hinge of the lantern door. Inside the glass sat a stub of wick, black and brittle, and I thought, this is foolish, nobody is coming up in this. Still I cut a new wick from the spool in the stable and fitted it, the way he had shown me a hundred times.
The flame caught on the fourth try and steadied, gold behind the panes, throwing its shadow long across the drift toward the road. I stood there with my fingers aching, feeling a fool. Then a shape came out of the white at the edge of the light, a man with a sack on his back and a dog at his heel, walking as though the lamp had called him by name.
He stopped beneath it and looked up, snow settling on his hat. 'Is this Hollin Cross?' he asked. I told him it was. 'Then I've been walking toward your lamp for an hour,' he said. The dog shook itself on the step, and the light held steady over all three of us while the snow kept falling through it.
