Neo-traditional thigh tattoo of an ornate black frame holding handwritten script, with swallows and red roses below.

Script frame with birds and roses on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large tattoo covers the outer thigh, showing an ornate black scrolled frame around an oval panel of handwritten script. Swallows and a small bird sit on the frame, and red roses with dark leaves fill the lower area. Bold black outlines and soft shading give the frame depth, while the roses and birds add warm red, orange and blue tones against the paler panel.

The frame came down off the back-kitchen wall the week after the last ewe lambed, when the yard was mud to the gatepost and the wind had found every gap in the barn. I didn't believe in that sort of promise when I was twelve. Swallows left Calder Bank every September and nobody on the farm had ever seen one come back to the same byre. Dad said they did, if the summer had been kind, and he swore the pair nesting above the parlour door were the grandchildren of the ones from the year Grandad went. I thought he was saying it to keep me from fretting, the way he said most things.

In February I took the quad down to the old cutting with a torch and a spade, because Mum had said the tobacco tin was buried under the hawthorn where Grandad used to hide his letters from the bank. It was there, rusted shut, and when I prised it open the paper inside was dry as toast. A pencilled swallow with a forked tail, and beneath it: Leave the barn door open and they'll find you.

So I propped the big doors with two round bales and left the lamp burning in the loft. The first swallow came through on the twelfth of April, low and quick over the dung heap, and it sat on the frame of the door looking at me as though it had been waiting for someone to be sensible.
