Las Vegas back piece in black and grey
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large back piece covers the whole of the upper and middle back. Its central panel is a Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign, with stacked poker chips, dice and city skyscrapers below it. Two realistic portraits sit at the upper left and right, with a clock face and a guitar also included in the design. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast between the darkest areas and the light grey highlights.

The herald of Carrow Sands had painted the words over the east gate so travellers could read them before the dust reached their eyes: WELCOME TO THE FABULOUS CITY. Nobody could say who had asked for the painting, only that the king's counting-house had paid for it in silver chips, and that the chips were stacked in towers outside the palace like a second skyline.

Every seventh night the clock in the tower struck the hour backwards. The old clockmaker, Tamsin Orrel, had built it to keep the gamblers honest, and she kept a ledger of every wager placed beneath its face. One night a young guitar-maker named Idris climbed the stairs with a borrowed debt and a song he had never finished. He asked her what the hour was. She told him it was whatever the dice said it was.
They played until the lamps guttered. Idris staked the song, the clockmaker staked the tower, and the king's dice-keeper rolled for them both across a table of black and grey stone. Three sixes came up. The clock hands swung round to the hour of the tower's own founding, and the city below went quiet, its glass and salt towers standing like spectators in the dawn. Idris lost the song, but he found he could still hum the chorus, and he hummed it all the way down the stairs.
In the morning the sign over the gate had been repainted. It still said welcome, but someone had added a line in smaller letters beneath: stay as long as you can afford to leave.
