The last of the cars had been left with their doors open, the way people leave a room they mean to come back to. Sheriff Dell Harrow walked the line of them on the Thursday, checking ignitions for keys and finding none.

Six rounds in the old revolver. He had told his daughter there were nine, and she had believed him, which was the kind of thing a father could still get away with. The city behind him had stopped answering the radio three weeks back. Its towers stood grey against a sky that never seemed to change its mind, and the shapes drifting between the cars did not look up when he passed.
At the end of the road sat the Pruitt place, white clapboard and a porch swing still moving in a wind he could not feel. He had promised the girl at the depot he would reach it by dark. He kept his arm straight, the way his training had taught him, fired once into the ditch where the crowd was thickest, and let the rest come on slow.
Five rounds. He counted them the whole last mile. When he reached the porch the swing had stopped, and someone inside had lit a lamp and set it in the front window, the way he had told the town to do years ago, back when a lamp meant somebody was coming home.
