Wildlife back piece with wolf, bears and moose

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large back piece shows a wolf's head at upper right, two bears in the centre, and a moose's head at lower right, set among pine trees, distant mountains and a waterfall. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast in the fur and foliage. The composition fills the whole back with the animals framed by the landscape.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the fire, the lot of you, and don't interrupt me the way your uncle did, because he always got the bears wrong. Now. The wolf came down off the high ground of Skerra in the hungry month, when the snow still lay in the gullies and the salmon had not yet found the burn. He was grey as sea-fog and twice as patient, and he sat on the flat rock above the falls at Eas Mhor while the water roared down past him like a thousand cartwheels.

Below him were two bears, Mór and her brother Dubh, who had been fighting since the thaw over one fish. The falls were so loud that nobody could hear their quarrel, only see their paws going like flails. In the pool at the foot of the rock stood Alasdair, the old bull moose, up to his chest in the cold water, sulking because he had decided the pool belonged to him and nobody had asked his permission. His antlers spread wider than the strait at Ardmor, and he was about as much use in a current as a wardrobe.

The wolf waited until the bears were out of breath. Then he leaned over the lip of the rock and said, quite mildly, that the salmon had been going over the top since dawn, and that every one of them was now sitting in the lochan above, laughing at the lot of them. The bears looked up. The moose looked up. Nobody moved for a long while, and the spray hung in the air between them like a held breath.

The wolf got up, shook the water from his coat, and walked back into the pines without taking a single fish. That's the part your uncle never tells you. So when you see a fish leaping at the falls, remember it's not for any of them, and never was. Now, bed. All of you.
