Latin script quote along the collarbone

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a handwritten script tattoo reading Vincit qui se vincit, set along the upper chest beneath the collarbone. The thin, dark linework has a flowing cursive style, with a long looping tail extending from the final letters. The ink is black on light skin, and the composition centres on the lettering with a small mole visible above it.

The lamp's smoking again, so forgive the smudges. Mam asked me to write before the frost shuts the lane to the mill, and I said I would, though you know how I am with a pen. She found your old wager book under the flagstone by the hearth yesterday, the one with the tally marks down the inside cover. Forty-one lines, every one crossed out in a different hand. I didn't tell her what it meant.

Mr Haskett at the wood's edge says the beeches are turning early this year, the copper going up the slope like something spilt. He's been cutting since before the war and he still quotes the words Grandad painted above the forge door: vincit qui se vincit. He conquers who conquers himself. He said it to me when I was twelve and tried to race the stream down to the weir, and I didn't understand him. I suspect you do now, or you should.

Here's the thing I can't get round. You wrote that you'd stop after the Michaelmas fair, and you meant it, I think. But Dad always said a man keeps his word to other people easily enough, and it's the word to himself that goes soft in the cold. So I'm asking you, not as the sister who lost a shilling to you at Yule, but as someone who watched you split kindling every morning this summer: come home and split it again. The wood is still stacked by the gate. Nobody's touched it.

Write back, or come back. Either will do.

Love, Ada
