Latin script quote along the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single line of cursive script reads Vincit qui se vincit across the side of the ribs, with a hand gripping the skin at the upper right. The linework is thin and even, with some letters slightly looped and joined. The ink is black and the photograph has a warm, yellowish tone with a plain background.

Sit where the shade falls off the wall, the lot of you, and keep your hands out of the windfalls, they're full of wasp. Now. There was a boy called Eamon Quill who grew up between these trees, and he was the fastest picker in the parish. He filled a basket before the others had found their ladders. He bragged about it at the cider press until old Mother Harrow told him to hush and pour her a cup.

One August the orchard grew heavy. The branches bowed down to the grass and every apple was red-cheeked and ripe, and Eamon decided he would pick the whole south slope before the sun went down. He climbed. He reached. His arms ached, his tongue went dry, and somewhere past the fourth row he sat down on a stone wall and wanted nothing more than to lie in the clover and let the wasps have the lot.
Mother Harrow came up the lane with her stick and her blue apron and found him there. She did not lift a finger to help. She pointed at the carved stone by the gate, the one with the letters worn almost to nothing, and told him what they said: he conquers who conquers himself. Then she went home to her kettle.
Eamon got up. He picked the slope, every last apple, and he did it slowly, one at a time, and when the sun went down he had not won any race at all. He had only stopped losing to his own tired arms. Mind the wasps on your way out, the lot of you.
