Until the very end script on the collarbone

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A thin, flowing cursive script reads until the very end in black ink across the upper chest, just below the collarbone. The linework is delicate and even, with slightly looped letters and no shading. The photo is taken close up in warm light, with a light grey top visible at the lower edge of the frame.

Dear Nell, the relief boat came in late again, so your tin of tea is still sealed on the shelf beside the brass polish. I have wiped the lens twice this morning because the salt haze rolled off the Sound before dawn and clouded everything. Mr Pardoe from the supply office says the new automatic light goes in at Michaelmas, and then the Trinity House men will not need a keeper at all. He said it the way you would mention the price of coal.

I have been thinking about what you said on the quay, that a promise is only as good as the hand that makes it. You were right to tease me about the lettering I did on the wall above the stove. It took four evenings with a sable brush and a pot of lamp black. I used a looping script, tall and thin, so the damp would not blur it. Until the very end, I wrote, and then I stood back and found it looked like a hymn nobody sings anymore.

The ink man from Harwich is due on Thursday's steamer, the one with the red funnel. I have asked him to put a small line of the same words on me, just below the bone where a collar sits, so that I carry them the way the light carries its beam, without anyone needing to look up. He laughed and said most men want anchors. I told him I had enough of the sea in me already and wanted something that stayed still.

When the steamer comes in, I will walk down the stone steps with my sleeves rolled, and you can tell me whether the loops are straight. If they are not, I will keep them anyway. Light the lamp on the sill for me tonight, the one I left unlit by mistake, and I will see it from the boat. Your loving husband, Tom.
