Laughing Buddha on the stomach
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A seated, smiling Buddha figure fills the centre of the abdomen, with a rounded belly and a bald head shown in soft grey shading. The figure wears a draped robe with fine detail and shadowed folds, and the wider shading gives the design a sculpted, three-dimensional look. The image is a close, front-on photo of bare skin with no colour ink, and the tattoo sits centrally in the frame above a dark waistband.

The stone had been in the yard since the spring tide took the breakwater, and Ada Preece still hadn't decided what it wanted to be. Her father had bought the block of grey granite off a Penzance barge for a headstone that never came. Now it sat under a tarpaulin behind the chandlery, waiting for her chisel, and every morning the gulls argued over it.

The captain of the Mary Lowe came in on a Tuesday wanting something for his cabin. He was a heavy man who had not laughed, he said, since his wife went under off Land's End. Ada looked at him for a long time, then at the stone, and saw a seated shape already waiting inside it: a bald head, a robe folded over the knees, a belly rounded like a harbour bell.
She worked through the winter with the workshop window open so she could hear the boats. The face came last. She cut the eyes into slits and the mouth into a grin so wide it nearly reached the ears, and when she finally put down the rasp the captain stood in the doorway with his cap in his hands and did not speak.
He paid her in coins and took the figure down to the quay on a handcart. Years later, Ada passed the Mary Lowe's moorings and saw dockhands queuing to rub the statue's stomach before a voyage, the granite worn to a soft shine around the navel. Nobody on the quay remembered the captain's name, but everyone knew the belly was lucky.
