Moth mandala and flying moth on shoulder
Traditional · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A circular arrangement of moth wings with eyespot markings sits on the shoulder, with a single moth in flight above it toward the upper back. The linework is bold and dark, with solid black fills and grey shading that gives the wings depth and pattern. The image is in black and grey, framed closely on the shoulder against a plain pale background.

Sit down, sit, the lamp is kinder to old eyes than to young ones, so you'll see the moths properly. Every night at the crossing at Sallow Bridge they came up off the water meadows and flew straight at the customs lamp, because a moth has never once in its life read a sign. The clerk on that post was Ilse Brandt, and she kept a ledger of them, not from any love of insects but because her father had told her a moth that crosses a border carries a name with it, and somebody ought to write the names down.

One wet night in October six moths came down onto the rail in front of her and arranged themselves in a ring, wings touching, around a single drop of spilled ink. Each had two great eyes on its wings, black rimmed with white, and every eye faced outward, toward the dark road beyond the barrier. Ilse counted them twice. Then she counted the eyes, which was harder, because they kept moving in the lamplight.
A carter came up the road just then, with a cart full of sealed crates and a face that wanted to be somewhere else. He asked her to hurry his papers. She told him to wait, she was busy with the moths, and he laughed until he saw what she was looking at. The eyes were not on the lamp at all. They were watching the road, and so, slowly, was she.
The moths lifted together at the sound of the next lorry. By morning the ledger had one line more than the night before, in a hand that was not hers, and a small dark mark in the margin where a wing had rested. The carter's crates went through without inspection. Nobody ever told her why, and she never asked. Count them yourself, if you like. There are always more eyes at a crossing than the sign admits.
