Jack and Sally in an ornate frame on the ribs
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows Jack Skellington and Sally embracing inside an ornate scrolled frame decorated with small skulls and a lower floral detail. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth and detailed, with heavy black areas balanced by fine grey tones. The image is a close view of the torso in daylight, with the design filling most of the frame.

Dear Ines,

The boat came in on Tuesday with the mail sack and no sign of Tomas, so you can imagine how I spent the afternoon on the harbour wall. Mrs Gall says the weather off the Scarrow reef has turned twice since Easter and that a man who sings to his net will not come to harm. I told her he is not the kind to sing. He whistles through his teeth when he mends, which is worse, because he never stops.
The frame you asked about is finished. Tomas carved it from driftwood the winter we were married, scrolled all round like the ironwork on the old chapel gate, with a little skull set at each corner. He said the mainland wives were always so solemn about the dead and he wanted something to laugh at. Inside it he has put the picture of us: him all elbows and stovepipe hat, me stitched together from old sail cloth with button eyes. I laughed when I saw it. Then I cried, which he says is the correct order.
Nothing else to report except the gulls have taken the washing again and the lamp at Corran is still out. Write soon and tell me what the mainland is saying about the storm.
Yours, Elsie
