Lava lamp with plug on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A colourful lava lamp is tattooed with its plug and cable trailing up to a bright yellow and green spark. The bold black outlines and shaded grey metal base contrast with the red, orange and yellow wax inside the glass, set against a soft blue background. Part of another tattoo is visible at the edges of the frame.

You find the lamp in the function room of the Ashgrove Community Hall, where the caretaker has plugged it into the only socket near the tea urn. Nobody remembers bringing it. It sits on a trestle table between a tin of Quality Street and a laminated sign that says RAFFLE, its wax already warming, bubbles tearing loose and sinking like slow orange planets.

Dev Okonkwo, who once set fire to the science lab's Bunsen burner and was never caught, is the first to recognise it. "Mrs Tanner's," he says. "Year nine. She kept it on the windowsill so the sun could get at it, and when the bell went she'd switch it off with her foot." You say you remember the cable, how it ran across the floor like a fuse, and how the whole class held its breath each time the glass began to glow.
Forty minutes in, the lights dip for the slideshow and the lamp is the only thing lit in the room. A photo of the Year Eleven netball team flickers on the screen behind it. You watch the wax rise through its colours and think about how Mrs Tanner told you the wax only moves because it is warm, and it only stays warm because something keeps pushing power through it.
When the caretaker unplugs it to get the urn going, the room goes dark, and for a second nobody speaks. Then Dev laughs and says he'll find the socket, and you stand, feeling along the cable past the table legs and the coats, until your fingers find the plug and push it home. The orange blobs begin to rise again, slow as ever. Nobody asked you to do it, but it seemed the right thing.
