Lantern and roses on a foot

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A lantern with a green metal frame and glowing orange centre is surrounded by three orange roses with green leaves. Bold dark outlines and flat fills define the forms, with soft black shading behind the design. The palette is limited to orange, green, grey and black, and the design fills the top of the foot as it wraps toward the ankle.

Dear Nell,

The power went at half eight on Saturday, halfway through the Pearly Waltz, and Mr Okonedo had the good sense to send Dennis up the ladder for the old paraffin lamps we keep in the cloakroom. Nobody believed they still worked. Dennis filled three with oil from the tin under the stage, and when he struck the first match the whole ballroom turned gold, as if someone had opened an oven door on the sea.

You'd have laughed at the band. The drummer played on with his cymbals half lit, and the couples went on dancing, very slowly, as though the floor might be more breakable than it was. Mrs Rowe in her green dress waltzed with the coat stand because she said she would not sit down in a dark room. Somebody passed round roses from the bucket by the door, the ones Joe brought back from the market, and we tucked them into our hair and buttonholes, orange as the lamp glass.

Here is the part I can't stop turning over. When the electric lights came back at eleven, nobody wanted the lamps put out. Dennis stood with his hand on the brass wheel of the nearest one, and Mrs Rowe said, quite sharply, leave it be. So we danced the last number by lamplight with the bulbs dark overhead, and nobody minded the hiss.

I walked home along the front with a lamp swinging from my fingers, feeling foolish and happy. I think I'll keep one for the flat. Come and see it when you're home at Easter, and bring your good shoes.

Love, Maisie
