Skeleton and skull on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A skeleton holding a glowing red heart is shown with its skull above, rendered with bold outlines and smooth colour blending. Warm yellow, orange and red tones highlight the bones and ribcage against cooler blue and purple shading and dark background accents. The tattoo covers the upper arm and extends toward the shoulder, with a pale skin edge visible on the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags had counted the ribs twice before she believed the bones belonged to a man and not a boat's figurehead. They lay in the silt under the slipway at low tide, twenty-six of them, arms folded across the chest as if he had been asked to wait his turn. Her father wanted the timber cleared before the spring tides. She wanted to know who had tucked a heart between those ribs.

It was not a real heart. Or it was, once, a glass thing blown in the Dutch style, red as a stoplight, with a candle wick sealed inside that somebody had lit a century back and never let go out. When she lifted it free the cold came off it like breath from a cellar, and the light inside turned amber, then gold, pooling through the gaps in the ribcage until the whole skeleton glowed the colour of a pub fire on a winter night.

Her father said the sea was full of such things. He said nothing about the skull, which had tilted toward the harbour mouth as though listening for a particular boat. Mags carried the heart up the steps and set it on the windowsill of the chandlery, where the blue dusk pressed against the glass and the flame kept its own warm counsel.

By morning the bones had gone from the silt. Only the heart remained on the sill, cool to touch, and beside it lay a single brass ferrule polished bright, the kind that caps an oar. She never learned who had come for him. She kept the light lit anyway.
