Lavender sprig on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single lavender sprig with several flower spikes and long, narrow leaves, bound at the base with a loose tie. The linework is fine and even, with light shading on the leaves and stems. The sprig runs up the centre of the upper arm against plain skin, with grey fabric visible at the right edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Peggy Hawes had tied forty bundles by the time the kettle went cold, and she was still three short for the Saturday stall at Aylsham. The loft smelt of the lavender drying on nails along the rafters, grey-violet and sharp enough to make her eyes run. She took a sprig from the top rung, shook the dust from it, and gathered the stems in her left hand the way her mother had shown her: thumb firm, the spikes all facing the same way like a row of tiny soldiers at attention.

The string was the difficult part. Her mother had used garden twine saved from the potting shed, but Peggy had only the white cotton from the haberdashery in town, and it kept slipping. She wound it twice, pulled, lost her grip, and started again. Somewhere below, the wireless murmured the shipping forecast to nobody. Her father used to say the lavender knew when weather was coming, that the stems went limp an hour before the rain, and she half believed him still.

By four the bundles stood in a row on the bench, identical to her eye and not at all identical to anyone else's. She picked up the last one and turned it over, looking at the knot, which sat a little off centre, the loose tails trailing like ribbon on a hat. It was untidy. It was hers. She tucked it under her arm, switched off the lamp and went down the ladder in the dark, counting the rungs out loud the way she had as a girl.
