Leaf and snake tattoos beside an open book
Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on an open printed book, with a crystal ring on one finger and a small acorn pendant necklace hanging nearby. Black linework leaves cover the back of the hand and wrist, and a coiled snake outline is visible on the arm at the right edge of the frame. The tattoos are in black and grey, and the warm, muted composition is completed by bare branches and a pinecone at the top left.

The book had come off the 4.12 from Carlisle wedged under a seat cushion, its spine cracked and a pinecone rolling loose from its pages when Nell Haworth lifted it onto the counter. She logged it as she logged everything: one volume, printed, foxed at the edges, no name written in the front. Lost property at Thornmere Junction had a drawer for books nobody came back for, and most of them ended up on the bench by the signal box with a hand-lettered sign that said take one.

Pressed between pages 112 and 113 was a leaf, brown and curled, and beneath it a skin of something thin and pale, folded like a letter. Nell held it up to the window light. It was a snake's sloughed skin, perfectly whole, the scales still marked in a pattern she could have traced with a fingertip. Someone had kept it there on purpose. She could tell from the way the leaf lay, stem to the gutter, the way a person places a thing they mean to find again.
Her father had kept a drawer like that, full of acorns and clay pipes and the teeth of animals he had never bothered to name. She had not thought of him in months, and she did not expect to think of him now, but the smell of damp paper and pine resin was the same.
On Friday a man in a waxed coat came asking, turning his hat round and round in his hands. He described the book by its colour and got the pinecone right. She handed it back across the counter, and when he opened it his thumb found the leaf without looking, as if it had been waiting there all along. Nell did not ask. She wrote the date in the ledger and let the skin stay where it was.
