Chest, wrist and forearm tattoos

Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A cropped photograph of a woman in a cream crochet bralette with a pendant necklace, showing several black ink tattoos. A small dark ornamental design sits on the centre of the chest, bands of linework or dotwork wrap the wrist, and a rose with leaves covers part of the forearm and hip. The shading is grey and black with no visible colour ink, and the dark background keeps the focus on the skin.

Brother Anselm has taught you to ruleline before you ever touch the gold, because a border that wanders will drag the whole page after it. So you sit at the scriptorium window with a fine pen and a pot of iron-gall ink, pricking tiny dots along the margin of a psalter for the abbess's nephew, who wants his name spelled out in roses and nothing else.

The rose garden behind the infirmary is the only thing in the abbey that does not keep to the bell. Its briars have crept over the wall and taken the herb beds, and the old gardener, Sister Ysolde, says they must be cut back on the feast of Saint Brigid or they will never be cut back at all. You have been drawing their leaves for a month, copying each serrated edge from life, until you can close your eyes and see the veins fan out like the ribs of a small umbrella.

On the last evening you carry the sketchbook to the garden with a lantern. The bloom nearest the wall has opened in the dark, and the one Ysolde kept back for the altar is already gone from its stem. In its place lies a single leaf pressed flat under a pebble, and beside it a scrap of vellum in Anselm's cramped hand that reads only: finish the border.

You kneel in the wet grass and hold the lantern close. The leaf is perfect, every tooth of its edge sharp, and you understand that he has been drawing the garden for you too, one dot at a time, all winter.
