Leafy branch with fruit on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A sprig of pinnate leaves hangs from a thin twig with a single round fruit beside the leaves. The design is built from fine outlines and dense stippled shading, which gives the leaves and fruit their volume. The black ink sits on the forearm against a plain grey tiled background, with the design centred on the arm.

The walnut at the back of Minster Hall came down on Tuesday, the big one the groundsman called the Parson, and I was there with my tin and my pencil when the men sawed through the lower limb. You will laugh at me, but I stood under it like a fool and counted the leaves on the twig they dropped at my feet. Nine leaflets to a stalk, each one pointed like a sailor's knife, and one green fruit still hanging on, round as a lamp shade ball and smelling sharp of iodine when I cracked the husk.
Mr Tolley wanted the wood for the fire at the Dance Hall, where the Thursday band plays on, he says, whether the floor is sound or no. I begged him for a branch. He gave me one, the length of my forearm, and I have pressed it between blotting paper under the Bible at the back of the shelf, where Mother kept the ration books.
The strange part is that the stain from the husk will not come off my fingers. Three days of soap and I still wear a brown tide-line at the knuckles, the colour of the iodine bottle. I went to the Hall on Thursday to listen to the band, and a boy from the bakery asked me to dance, and I said yes before I thought about my hands.
I am sending you a leaf from that branch, folded inside this letter. Mind the crease. It is the only thing from that tree I could keep.
Your loving sister, Edie
