Tree of life with roots on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black line tree sits inside an open circle, with leafy branches spreading to the upper left and roots reaching down and to the right. The linework is thin and even, with small solid leaves and no shading, and the design is done entirely in black ink on pale skin. The plain white background keeps the focus on the tattoo, which sits in the centre of the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are the night watchman for the council, and every night at two you walk the line of plane trees along Lock Street with a torch that never quite reaches their crowns. The city has been laid over their roots for a hundred years. The pavement lifts in neat arcs where something beneath is still trying to breathe, and you have learned to step around the swollen slabs without looking down.

Tonight the crack outside number nine is wider than it was yesterday. You kneel with the torch and find a root as thick as your wrist, pale and forked, running under the kerb toward the old bus shelter the council has painted over twice. Someone has drawn a ring of chalk around the base of the shelter's post. The lines are fresh and perfectly even, as if traced with a compass. Nobody you know owns a compass like that.

You follow the root down Clement Road, past shuttered bakeries and a laundrette whose light is still on, until the pavement gives out at a bricked-up churchyard gate. Beyond the wall the branches lean over as though listening. Their leaves catch the streetlight and turn it into small dark shapes, like punctuation on a page nobody has finished writing.

At dawn the council van pulls up to lay tarmac over the crack. You raise a hand and tell the driver to leave it a week. Let the roots decide where the path goes. He starts to laugh, then glances up at the plane trees, goes quiet, and nods.
