Palm tree on an ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black palm tree with two slender, curved trunks rising from a small tuft of ground at the base, and a full crown of feathered fronds. The fronds are shaded with dense black ink while the trunks are fine single lines, giving a crisp silhouette. The tattoo sits centrally on smooth skin against a dark background, with the subject filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The well at Sarn Cove had gone brackish the summer the boats came back short, and so the old women of the village sent the youngest girl, Maren, up the cliff path with a jug and a coil of rope. Nobody told her what she was looking for. They said the sea would tell her, and that she should not answer if it spoke first.

She climbed past the gorse and the sheep bones and the cairn where the drowned were counted, and at the top of the headland she found a single palm standing in the wind, which made no sense, because there had never been a palm on that coast. Its two trunks leaned toward each other like fishermen sharing a secret, and its crown hung low and dark against the grey sky, every frond combed out sharp as a gull's wing.

She sat down beneath it to wait for the sea to speak. It was a long wait. The tide turned twice. Then a voice came up out of the rock below her, very polite, asking whether she had brought anything to drink. Maren kept her mouth shut, as she had been told, and filled the jug from the spring that ran under the palm's roots, and poured it down the cliff. The water went down a long way before it hit anything.

When the boats came home that autumn they were full to the gunwales, and the old women said nothing about it, only that the girl had been brave. The palm is still up there. Nobody has ever found the spring, but on still evenings you can see its shadow lying flat across the water, reaching out towards the boats as if it were counting them in.
