Fine line tattoo of a head outline with coloured Lego bricks scattered across the face, on the forearm.

Lego bricks spilling from a head outline

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black outline of a head in three-quarter view sits on the inner forearm, with the face partly covered by scattered Lego bricks. The bricks are filled in blue, green, red, yellow and orange, with some pieces drifting off past the outline. The thin black linework is clean and even, and the composition is centred on the forearm against a plain pink background.

Dear Tom,

Don't laugh, but we lost a crate of bricks at Hatton lock on Tuesday. The bottom board gave way when Dad wedged the gate, and a hundred or so loose pieces went over the side: red, blue, yellow, that dull green nobody makes any more. The canal kept most of them. The rest came up in the weeds for a week, and I still find them in my boots, in the stove ash, once in the bread tin.

Here's the odd part. Mrs Okafor at the top lock sent word that a boy from the moorings has been pressing bricks into the lock beam, faces mostly, and he asks every boater if they've seen the one with the missing nose. I took up a jar of marmalade to see for myself. There it was: a head drawn in lumpy outline on the wood, with bricks stuck along one side and already half of them fallen off. The wind had taken the forehead. I stood there a long time.

Anyway, I've decided to keep the rest. I've started on the cabin roof, pushing them into a rough shape with my thumbs, no plan, just whatever colour is nearest. Dad says I'll knock the paint off. He said it in the voice he uses for the weather.

Come up in June if you can. Bring the good tin of tea and that stupid cap you left on the hook. I'll show you the face when it's finished, or when I give up on it, whichever comes first.

Love, Nell
