Colour tattoo of two embracing figures based on Klimt's The Kiss, with the word LOVER beside them, on the inner forearm.

Klimt-style embracing couple on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two figures embracing with closed eyes, drawn in bold black outline with a gold patterned robe filled with circles, squares and rectangles. The woman's robe and the man's dark clothing are decorated with small coloured dots, flowers and stars in orange, purple, green and red. The word LOVER runs in black lettering down the right side, and the design sits on a forearm against a plain pink background.

Dear Ruth,

You will think I have finally lost my wits, but I have spent three days in Vienna copying gold. Not paint: gilder's gold, the leaf laid on red bole and burnished with a dog's tooth until it stops being metal and becomes light. The guard at the Belvedere, a Hungarian with a moustache like a yard brush, let me sit on the bench under the big picture on the condition that I did not touch the glass.

I did not touch the glass. I only watched. Two figures stand at the edge of a field of gold, his head bent down, her eyes shut, and the whole robe is squares and circles, a hundred small rectangles like the tiles of a grand hotel bathroom. Every one of them is a small lie the painter told so that we would believe the pair of them stood on something precious. I could count the lies from the bench. I counted them until the guard coughed.

What held me was the cloth at the edges, the dark where nobody looks, sprinkled with orange dots and purple flowers and little stars like someone shaking out a box of sweets. I kept thinking about what I would have put there instead.

So I went down to the river, bought a tin of cheap enamel from a barge man called Pavel, and sat on the wall painting dots onto the inside of my own forearm with a sable brush from my bag. Orange, then red, then a green that refused to dry. Sophie says it looks like a rash. I told her it is the only honest gold I have ever put on anything, and she laughed, which is the first time since March.

Write back and tell me the boys are eating.

Your brother, Tom
