Leopard and snake wrapped around a leg
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A snarling leopard with red-spotted fur is coiled with a black snake that has a blue scale pattern and red underside. The snake's head, with its mouth open, sits at the right beside the leopard's head. Bold black outlines and flat red, teal and blue fills dominate, set against bare skin with a shoe visible at the bottom edge.

You are the one who was told to keep the leopard out of the marquee, which is how you end up on the wet grass behind the vicarage at half past two, holding a chain that Mr Odell swore was stronger than it looks. The bride's brother has already lost a shoe to the thing. Somebody's aunt is singing the hymn in a voice that could curdle milk, and the leopard, Bessie, watches the church hall door with her ears flat, as if she has been promised a waltz.

The snake came with the show, in a biscuit tin with holes punched in the lid. Mr Odell called her Mrs Vane and said she had swallowed a bishop's cat in Lincolnshire, though nobody has ever checked. When the tin tipped in the car park, Mrs Vane went straight for the cake table, then for Bessie, and you expected blood. Instead the two of them went round each other in a slow knot, black and spotted, red bellies flashing like ribbon in the lamplight, until they were one tangle wrapped around the hay bales.
Now the bride's father is crossing the lawn with his tie undone and his mouth already opening to speak. You could let the pair keep their knot a little longer, or you could pull the chain and march everyone back to the speeches, where nobody has yet asked who the best man is.
Bessie leans her weight against your knee and purrs like a kettle coming to the boil. Mrs Vane lifts her head from the straw and looks at the father the way she looked at the cake, and you let the chain go slack.
