Let go script with arrow on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the words let go written in a flowing cursive script, with a thin arrow running through the lettering. The arrow has a feathered fletching at the left and a open triangular head at the right, both drawn in fine black lines. The image is greyscale and shows the tattoo against plain skin with a dark background at the edges.

Sit closer, the lot of you. The rain has found the gap under the awning and I will not shout over it. Yes, you at the back with the soggy paper bag, listen. There was a bowyer in Cheapside called Osric Dunmore who made the finest yew bows in the county, and his daughter Ada could string one before she could spell her own name.

She shot a hare off the wall at forty paces the summer she turned twelve, and her father wept into his beard and called her a true archer. He had one rule of the trade. Every arrow he fletched, he bound three goose feathers with waxed thread, and every arrow he loosed, he murmured the same two words over the string: let go. Not a prayer, mind. An instruction, the way you'd tell a dog to sit.
Ada never once managed it. She held the string too long, she held grudges longer, and she held the stall keys in her fist through the night the river came up over the cobbles. The trouble with holding on, the old man used to say, is that the arrow stays in your hand and never reaches the target.
Then came a Thursday in weather much like this, when the bowstring snapped at full draw and the shaft went wide and split the tollman's board clean in two. Silence in the square. Then the tollman laughed until he coughed, and Ada found she was laughing too, and when she looked down her hands were empty and open, and the rain ran off her fingers as if she had never held anything at all.
