Let it be script tattoo on the wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a black and grey photograph of the words let it be written in a joined cursive script across the inner wrist. The linework is smooth and even, with solid black strokes and little shading. The plain light background keeps the focus on the lettering, which runs horizontally across the centre of the frame.

The last bus of the night sighs into the depot at Hunslet just after two, and you are the only one still crouched at the shutter with a torch clamped in your teeth. "You'll snap it," she says. "Ray's keys never fitted either. He just leaned on the thing and talked to it." Ray retired in March and left behind a tin of pencils, a dog-eared timetable and a habit of writing on anything within reach. You have found his notes everywhere: on the fare box lid, the back of a route map, the inside of the kettle cupboard. Most say the same thing in his looping hand: let it be.
You find the last one tucked behind the sign reading NO ENTRY AFTER 0200. It says the shutter sticks in damp weather, that you should stop forcing it and wait for the cold to shift the metal. Half laughing, you set the key down on the step and sit beside Marguerite on the kerb.
For forty minutes nothing happens. Then a gust comes off the river, the old steel groans and slides up on its own, and sodium light spills across the empty bays. Marguerite stands, pats your shoulder and climbs into the cab. You follow her in and leave the key lying where it fell.
