Three birds and Let it be on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three solid black bird silhouettes in flight sit above the words Let it be, written in a flowing script. The birds are filled in with solid black ink, and the script has smooth, even linework with thin and thick strokes. The tattoo is shown in close view on the inside of a pale wrist against a dark leather surface, with a plain background.

You are the one who carries the buckets, because Mr Corran says your arms are the only ones on the field that do not shake. The fair has pitched on the flat above the reservoir for nine days, and every morning before the gates open, the rooks come down off the poplars to pick at the spilt candyfloss. Corran swears at them in Cornish and throws them crusts he has no business throwing.

On the last Saturday the wind turns and the big wheel groans. The tin birds at the shooting gallery rattle loose from their wires, and three of them lift off the sawdust and go, the way real birds do, straight over the hedge into the sky. A lad from the Tuesday crowd grabs your sleeve and says the gaffer will take it out of your wages. You look at the empty wire, then at the three black shapes already small above the car park.
Corran comes out wiping his hands on a rag. He looks up for a long moment, then takes the air rifle off its hooks and hands it to you, barrel down. "Let them be," he says. "The wheel can owe us for a day." He does not sound like a man who minds much.
Later, when the lamps are coming on and the field is mud and paper cups, you walk to the edge of the reservoir. The three shapes are circling over the water, riding the warm air off the dam, refusing to settle anywhere in particular. You stand there with the empty bucket until the light goes, and you count them every time they cross the moon.
