A close crop shows the words Let it be written in a slim, joined black script across the side of the ribcage. The linework is thin and even, with solid black strokes and no shading. The skin is warm toned and the blurred blonde hair and dark top frame the tattoo against a soft, light background.

Mairead had the lamp trimmed by four, though the glass was already clean, because her father had taught her that a keeper's hands needed something to do while the sea made up its mind. The relief boat was late. The letter from the Northern Lights office lay folded under the tea caddy, and she had read it twice: the station would close at Michaelmas, the light automated, the cottage let to someone from Edinburgh who wanted it for summers. Her brother wanted her in Aberdeen. The sea wanted nothing, which was the one thing she had always trusted about it.
At midnight she climbed the iron stair and found the lens turning on its bath of mercury, slow as a clock. Her father's voice came back to her: you cannot make the tide come in faster by standing on the rock and glaring at it. She laid her palm on the cold brass, felt the turn of it under her hand, and let her shoulders drop.
When the relief boat finally nosed past the rocks at dawn, the sky had gone the colour of pearl and she was asleep on the bench with the log open under her cheek. Beneath the night's weather she had written three words in the same careful hand, not a forecast but a decision. She closed the book, took up the letter, and went down to meet the boatman with her answer ready.
