Live forever script on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a woman seen from behind, with a braid falling over one shoulder. A small, thin script tattoo reading live forever sits on the upper back, just below the nape of the neck. The soft lighting and dark background keep the focus on the delicate lettering and the white knotted halter straps.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, the Bramley trees are so heavy this year that Mum has propped the lower boughs with old broom handles, and the whole orchard smells of windfalls and wasps. I finally took the tin of grafting wax down from the potting shed, the one with Grandad's rusted penknife rattling inside, and found a seed tray label tucked under the lid. His pencil was faint and slanted, the way he wrote when his hands had started to shake, and it said live forever in small letters, underlined twice.

I'd always assumed he meant himself, the way he laughed at the doctor and kept walking the rows at dawn. But I stood there with the label between my fingers and thought about the twine he knotted round every graft he ever made, how he'd pull each knot tight with his teeth before he'd let go. He wasn't talking about his own life at all. He was talking about the trees, and about keeping them pruned hard enough that they'd go on bearing long after anybody who planted them was gone.

So I did what he'd have done. I took the shears to the old Blenheim on the north side, the one he swore was dying in 1987, and cut it back to a clean open centre. There was a crop on it anyway, small and green and sour, and I picked the first basket this morning with my hair tied up in a bit of the same twine.

I've left the last apple on the gate post for you, and the knot is still on it. Come and take it before the wasps do. Love, Nell
