Black and grey fine line script tattoo reading liberté on a person's upper back.

Liberté script on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of the upper back of a person with dark hair falling over one shoulder, showing a small tattoo of the word liberté in flowing cursive script. The linework is thin and even, with slight variation in weight, and sits near the centre of the upper back against smooth, softly shaded skin. A pale top strap is visible along the lower edge of the frame.

Dear Mathieu, the ink is the last of Father's, so forgive the blots. Mme Varin has taken the ribbon loom off the second floor and the girls are wrapping silk on the stairs now, which is how I came to be sitting on the bottom step with a pattern card and a stub of pencil when the carter brought your letter from Marseille.

You ask what I am doing with my evenings. Mostly I am practising a word. The buyers from Brussels want a band of script woven along the selvedge of their evening sashes, and they sent us a sample in a hand so loopy I could not read it, so I have been writing the thing out myself a hundred times until my wrist aches. It is a plain word. Liberté. Mme Varin says it will sell because men like the look of a thing they are not allowed to have.

Last night I wrote it slowly, the way Papa taught us to write our names for the church register, and on the final letter my pencil stopped above the accent and would not come down. I sat there long enough for the lamp to gutter. Then I pressed harder than I should and tore the card a little, and I thought, well, that is the one I shall keep.

The card is in the envelope. Do not show it to the carter. Come home when the boat sails, and bring that tin of Marseille soap Ada likes, and we will argue about the stitches over supper like we used to. Your sister, Odile.
