Familia script tattoo on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a person's neck and upper shoulders, with dark hair tied up and a black top visible below. A small, delicate script word, familia, sits centrally on the nape of the neck. The thin, single-weight linework is rendered in black ink on a black and grey photograph, with the word set against plain skin.

The envelope came to Hastings with no letter inside, only the word on the back in my father's hand, the f looped like a fishhook and the rest pulled thin as cotton thread. He had been dead three years, and the postmark said last Tuesday. My brother Ignacio never could leave a thing unsaid, so I knew he had sent it on purpose. I spent the evening at the kitchen table with a fountain pen, trying to get the slant right.

Our father wrote that same word at the foot of every letter he sent from the ship, never a greeting, never a goodbye, just familia, as if it were a signature and a receipt. We thought it was sentiment. Ignacio, at nineteen, told me it was a bill he was still paying off, and I laughed at him over the sink. Forty years later I understood he had meant the counting: who stayed, who went, who sent money home and who simply stopped writing.
I wrote back to Ignacio on the good paper, copying the flourish until my wrist ached, and at the bottom I put the word the way Papá did, all in one stroke. Then I walked to the pillar box on Queens Road in the rain, past the chip shop and the shuttered bingo hall, and I stood there longer than I needed to, the envelope damp against my palm. Nobody was behind me.
I posted it and heard it drop onto the others, a small soft sound, like someone settling into a chair at the far end of a long table.
