Realism tattoo of a lighthouse under a lightning storm with rough sea below, placed on the calf.

Lighthouse and storm on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a tall lighthouse with a railed gallery and lantern room, rising from a rocky base above churning dark water. Lightning bolts strike through heavy clouds behind it, and the shading builds soft, detailed tones across the tower, sky and sea. The palette is mostly muted browns, greys and sepia with warm tan and rust tints, and the design wraps around the calf.

Marta had the lantern room to herself by ten, which suited her. The old light on Carrick Point had been dark since the new breakwater went in, but the council kept the gallery and the iron stair, and the night-watch rota kept her climbing them. Tonight the cloud came in low over the docks like a lid being pressed down, bruised brown at the edges, and she could see the lightning walking across the water a long way out, each bolt landing on the sea in a white stitch.

Her father had kept this light before her. He used to say a lighthouse was just a clock that told ships where they were, and he had hated the electric timer that replaced him. She had found his logbook in a drawer under the rail, the pages gone soft as cloth, every night's weather written in pencil: wind south-west, glass falling, lamp lit at 17.42. The last entry was in a hand that shook. She had not wanted to read it twice.

At half past eleven the radio crackled. A coaster called Ardent Lass was dragging her anchor off the Long Sands, and the harbourmaster wanted the light checked, though it was already burning. Marta turned the lamp up by hand anyway, feeling the heat through her gloves, and watched the beam sweep the rocks where the surf broke brown and heavy as spilled tea.

The coaster came round the point at dawn, low in the water and whole. Marta wrote the time under her father's last line: lamp lit, wind south-west, glass steady. Then she wrote nothing else for a while, and let the light do the talking.
