Lighthouse in a storm on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A tall, detailed lighthouse with a domed lantern room stands on a dark rocky base at the centre of the design. Behind it, a cloudy sky with forked lightning and a stormy sea are shaded in soft greys and browns, with fine texture on the stonework and windows. The tattoo wraps vertically up the calf, with the lighthouse as the main focal point and the storm filling the surrounding space.

You take the night watch because nobody else will, and because the light needs a hand on it when the weather turns. Tonight the glass is streaked with salt and the lamp hums like a kettle that never boils. Below the gallery the sea is making its wrong noise again, a low grinding under the rock that Harrow swore was only the tide shifting shingle. You write the time in the log in pencil, then the wind, then the words you have been putting off: Lightning to the south, three strikes, none on the tower.

The storm comes in from the west the way they always do, a bruise spreading over the cloud until the whole sky is the colour of wet slate and rust. The forks walk down out of it and touch the water a mile off, and for a second you can see every wave standing up stiff and separate. Harrow's boy, who came out on the relief boat in September and has not stopped being frightened since, climbs up the iron ladder with a cup of tea gone cold. He asks whether the lighthouse ever gets hit. You tell him the lightning likes the tall things on the horizon, and that a tower is only a long argument with the weather that the weather has not yet finished winning.
At four the lamp starts to dim. You feel it before you see it, a thinning in the beam, and you go down the stairs two at a time to the paraffin store. The boy is already there with the can, shaking, holding the funnel exactly as you showed him. You fill it together without spilling a drop. Above you the great lens turns on its brass bearing, and far out past the rocks the light catches one small boat, sails down, drifting home, and you write that in the log too, in pencil, so the rain cannot take it.
